Director
"BIS was ten years old in August 2007 and is at a really exciting stage of development," states Peter Murphy, Director of Bonn International School (BIS). "We have wonderful students, a great faculty and the best possible riverside location. As a result of the considerable support we have locally and nationally, we were able to move into our fantastic facility in January 2006. Effective schools are characterised by strong partnerships between teachers, students and their parents. I would warmly encourage you to visit us - spend some time in our classrooms, meet other students and parents and discover what BIS has to offer."
A founding member of the BIS community, Peter Murphy has been with the school since it opened in 1997. He has 29 years experience in education having worked in a variety of state schools in the UK before coming to Bonn. Peter also worked for three years in adult education for a German governmental organisation concentrating on 'Sustainable Change Management.'
Originally appointed as Director of Studies he became the Secondary School Principal in 1999 and was promoted to his current role in 2003. A common strand through Peter's professional life has been the development of high-quality educational experiences for students from different backgrounds. At BIS he has both helped lead the successful implementation of the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum in the secondary school, and establish Bonn as a 'centre of best practice.'
As Chair of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) Middle Schools Principal's Committee, and a member of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) Curriculum and Assessment Committee he has been actively engaged in curriculum development.
Peter is a regular member of international accreditation teams, helping schools through the process of self-assessment and quality assurance.
In 2006, Peter Murphy was elected Chair of the Board of AGIS (Association of German International Schools). AGIS is an umbrella organisation coordinating the work of 21 international schools throughout Germany.
