Electives
In addition to the various mandatory parts of the IB programmes, there are elective classes that are part of the programme as well. The following provides an overview:
Learning Support : for students needing additional assistance with their schoolwork. Learning Support usually follows from problems identified by a teacher. After consultation with parents and testing of the student concerned, they may be directed into this group to get additional help in problem learning areas.
Extra English : for students whose mother tongue is not English. Extra English helps develop the young person's skills and knowledge in the school's language of instruction. Students may be directed into this course if a need is perceived and leave again when their knowledge has developed sufficiently.
Performance : learning and practicing musical performance individually and in groups. Students focus mostly on the performance aspect, without the degree of theoretical study found in music classes.
Sport : learn about and participate in range of games and sporting activities. This elective does not have the same emphasis on learning about physical development that is found in the Physical Education class. The sports offered depend on the interests of the students and the expertise and interests of the teachers. Many of the games that appear in Physical Education classes are pursued in the elective class, but with a greater emphasis on game playing. Higher levels of performance are also encouraged.
French : a course for learning French as a foreign language. The course caters for beginners in Grade 6 or 7 (only), with progressively higher levels available in higher grades.
