Languages
The Bonn International School has an extensive language programme, helping students from various countries who may not have English as their first language and students who are interested in learning foreign languages.
BIS encourages mother tongue development through:
German is offered to all students from the EL level to Grade 12, unless their command of the English language requires additional support. German is offered at both mother tongue level as well as foreign language level and various entry points are available so that students may enter at an appropriate acquisition level.
Mother Tongue Languages
BIS encourages mother tongue development through:
- Accommodating students in the main language programme
- Providing classroom space for external mother tongue groups to run after school classes
- A range of individually arranged programmes e.g. on line tutors

Other Foreign Languages
- French is the other main language offered in the secondary school. The school makes every effort to accommodate students in the language programme at the appropriate acquisition level.
- English as an Additional language (EAL): As the language of instruction at BIS is English, non-native speakers of English may be required to attend EAL classes. The purpose of these classes is to develop English to a level where the student can meaningfully participate in the regular academic programme.
