Student Council

This school year has seen changes in Bonn International School's Student Council (SC). New Staff and students have attempted to bring a new attitude or life into the SC, with the development of different structures and events.

The process began with student opinion about past successes and concerns with the existing Council. Student feedback was quite positive. Examples follow:

  • "The SC is one way in which students from all the grades get together to try to discuss important school issues" (Hillary L., Grade 12)
  • "…It gives the students the opportunity to do something for the school. It lets the students have their voice heard" (Jade C., Grade 12)
  • "Student council has a voice in what happens at school, as well as mediating between teachers and students" (Elizabeth W., Grade 11)
  • "Someone can do things for their peers" (Patricia G., Grade 6)
  • "A collection of students representing all ranges throughout the school who can come together to discuss student body issues" (Victoria S., Grade 11)
  • "A student council is a body of students that represents the students" (Ben B., Grade 9)
  • "A Council that allows the year group to have its opinions heard and commented on" (Eleanor J., Grade 11)

The structure of the Council was expanded to ensure the SC would fit in with the commitments students have during their busy week - two representatives from each Homeroom were elected and a large Council of 28 students resulted.

In an attempt to encourage leadership and role models across all ages, the positions of Junior Secretary and Treasurer were opened up to Grade 8 and 9 students, allowing them to be mentored by the Senior Secretary and Treasurer from Grades 10 -12.

At present, Grade 6 & 7 students have 'just' taken on the role of representatives for their homerooms, as they adjust to life at a new school and settle into the MYP.
Grade 8 to 9 pupils will take on the role as not only Homeroom representatives but may also play a second role as Secretary or Treasurer.
Grade 10 students will not only take on the role of Homeroom representatives but may also play a second role as Secretary, Treasurer or Vice President.
Similarly, Grade 11 to 12 pupils will not only take on the role as Homeroom representatives but may also play a second role as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice president or President.

Events or activities undertaken by the SC have included a number of "Spirit Weeks", one of which embraced the area we live in by the celebration of "Karnival". At present, money is being raised to improve the Basketball area. Plans also exist to host a Summer Barbeque during the final days of school.

We, the advisors, hope that the SC is an opportunity for students to be involved in the school and help make it a more positive place. The SC remains an excellent way for students to both contribute and affect the running of their own community.
